Welcoming a new baby into the world is a joyous occasion, but it can also be quite overwhelming, especially when the baby cries incessantly. Babies cry for many reasons – hunger, discomfort, overstimulation, and sometimes just to get attention. As a new parent, it can be tough to know how to soothe a crying baby. In this blog post, we will discuss some practical tips to calm your baby and bring some peace to your household.
Check for Hunger
One of the most common reasons why babies cry is hunger. Try feeding your baby if it has been a while since the last feed. I know it can be tough to keep track of the feedings. But, it can be important during this time to jot it down in your phone notes. If your baby is not interested in feeding, try burping them to relieve any trapped air in their tummy.
Check for Hunger Cues
Every baby is different but keep a look out on the hunger cues. This can help to anticipate the crying before it happens. Watch the babies mouth. Are they making sucking motions with their lips, opening and closing mouth or puckering lips. Are just some signs to look for to anticipate feeding and nurturing.
Change Their Diaper
A wet or dirty diaper can make babies uncomfortable and fussy. Check your baby’s diaper and change it if necessary.
Swaddle Your Baby
Swaddling your baby in a soft, comfortable blanket can help them feel secure and calm. Wrap your baby snugly, but not too tightly, in a lightweight blanket. The feeling of being held and the warmth from the blanket can help soothe a crying baby. Check out this video below that will walk you through step by step in how to swaddle.
Rock or Bounce Your Baby
Gentle rocking or bouncing can be very soothing for babies. You can hold your baby and sway back and forth or use a baby rocker or bouncer to create a rhythmic motion. Be careful not to shake your baby, as this can be dangerous.
Use White Noise
White noise can mimic the sounds your baby heard in the womb and create a calming effect. You can use a white noise machine, a vacuum cleaner, or a hairdryer to create a soothing sound. Just make sure the volume is not too loud.
Go For A Walk
Sometimes, a change of scenery can help calm a crying baby. Strap your baby into a stroller or baby carrier and go for a walk around the neighborhood or in a park. Just a little air will do you and the baby a world of good.
Comfort Baby With Your Voice
Your voice is a powerful tool to soothe your baby. Talk to your baby in a calm, soothing tone and sing them a lullaby. Hearing your voice can help your baby feel secure and calm.
Remember, all babies are different, and what works for one may not work for another. Be patient and try different techniques until you find what works for your baby. Also, remember that crying is a normal part of a baby’s development, and it will eventually subside as your baby grows older. If you ever feel overwhelmed or need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doula, pediatrician or a support group for new parents.
