Comfort Positions to Enhance Breastfeeding Journey

When I came home with my second born daughter, I was determined to master breastfeeding. I believe that one of the foundations in breastfeeding is being comfortable while you are doing it. It’s already uncomfortable when you are first starting out.  It’s vital to gain your confidence through finding your comfort zone.

Here are the breastfeeding comfort positions that I count on…

Breastfeeding Position to Gain Back Control

When I tell you that this position will fit you perfectly if you are breastfeeding a premature baby or if your baby has a weak suck. This comfort position called the “Cross Cradle”  will give your baby the extra head support it needs to stay and keep latched! You have the control to hold the baby’s head at the base of their neck and the palm of your hand.

Breastfeeding Position that Instinctively Impacts Baby

Just lean back into it! This position is opposite to the cross cradle. Simply because it gives the baby control and it is led by the baby.  The “Laid Back” hold is a very relaxed comfort position that allows you to lay the baby against your body. Just allow gravity and the babies instinct to find your breast. As a doula, I often use this position for my vaginal delivery birthing persons as it allows the baby to search for your breast.  As you support its neck.

Breastfeeding Position to Impact C-Section Birth

This comfort position is perfect for my c-section mothers; it gives you the opportunity to rest. Using the “Side Lying” position is simply lying on your side while your baby faces you. Just nustle your baby as close to you as you secure your latch.

The Most Common Breastfeeding Position

My go to and everyone’s go to is the “Cradle” hold. It is the most common form of support. It is great for mothers and babies as you place your baby right into your forearm. As your body faces yours and you make instant eye to eye contact…

As I had to find out quickly on my own, comfort is key in winning at breastfeeding. If you didn’t know it’s all about finding the right comfort position that fits you and your baby.  I hope that these few comfort positions will spark something new in your breastfeeding routine.  As it’s all about finding your comfortability in your breastfeeding journey.

Especially as a black or brown mom, we are breaking generational barriers when we choose to breastfeed our children.  In my own generational line, my mother didn’t breastfeed including me nor my other three siblings.  If you would like more information just like this.  Check out our NurturHer app. You can open up our web based app. Just by clicking HERE!
