Why I Became A Doula

My life didn’t start out knowing that I wanted to be a birth doula. My call into this journey in becoming a doula and business owner was disguised under a lot of responsibility, growing pains and grit in trying to build a better life for my daughter and I.

What’s in your doula bag? It’s the question that may loom over your head. When you are anticipating hiring a doula for your family. This may be a point of wonder, as you prepare for the birth of your child.

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a joyous occasion, but it can also be quite overwhelming, especially when the baby cries incessantly. Babies cry for many reasons – hunger, discomfort, overstimulation, and sometimes just to get attention.

When I came home with my second born daughter, I was determined to master breastfeeding. I believe that one of the foundations in breastfeeding is being comfortable while you are doing it. It’s already uncomfortable when you are first starting out.  It’s vital to gain your confidence through finding your comfort zone.

You found out you’re pregnant. However, with that news comes a windstorm of uncertainty.  Where we are unsure of how our bills will be paid and how are we going to manage taking care of this new blessing coming into our lives. We must first take a look within ourselves.

Hi mama-to-be, we know pregnancy can be a lot, especially when it comes to prepping your home for your new bundle of joy to arrive.  Yes, it can get overwhelming for sure. As, you look at what you need to buy, borrow or get essentials needed to secure your babies nesting area. Here are some organization and nesting tips that will help you keep your head up and your space organized before your baby arrives.

The shame that overshadowed the feeling of wanting to experience the joy.  When all you would like to be is happy in birthing your first child.  Instead there was the fear that continued to loom over your head.  As you think to yourself.  Are you able to be a mother?  Can you even afford this?  I feel so alone? As a young woman in her twenties about to take on this heavy responsibility.  A responsibility that I wasn’t ready nor prepared to take on at the time.

Nadiyah Al-Amin, has worked with women in the medical industry that has lit a passionate desire in her heart to serve the overlooked woman. She looked in the eyes of women time and time again that lacked the proper educational, emotional and advocacy support that she felt they desperately needed.

As the father to be, it’s easy to feel like there’s not much you can do in the days leading up to delivery. After all, your wife or partner’s body calls the shots, and you can’t always plan the exact day and time your bouncing bundle will make their big debut. However, you can get things ready so that the process glides along smoothly when she says “it’s time.”

Am I eating enough vitamins daily in my diet?  What can I eat to ensure that I am in taking enough nutrients a day?  These questions along with many others swirled in my head before and after pregnancy. It’s bad enough that you may be getting over morning sickness and have moved into the world of swollen feet…
