Tips for Dad: Getting Ready for Delivery

As the father to be, it’s easy to feel like there’s not much you can do in the days leading up to delivery. After all, your wife or partner’s body calls the shots, and you can’t always plan the exact day and time your bouncing bundle will make their big debut. However, you can get things ready so that the process glides along smoothly when she says “it’s time.”

Planning Ahead

One of the greatest things you can do to support mom and baby is to make sure there are plenty of healthy meal options waiting at home. Kangaroo Birthing & Maternity’s pre-cooked meal menu includes savory options, such as honey-glazed salmon and cauliflower mac & cheese. You can also schedule a few pre-and postpartum house cleaning services so that mom can focus on the baby once you arrive home. Now is also a great time to stock up on natural cleaners, including disinfectants and laundry detergent, since you want the healthiest environment possible for your little one.

Birth Day Packing List

Your partner’s hospital bag should reflect her needs and wants with a few little extras for you both to enjoy. No hospital bag is complete without the following:

  • A delivery gown. A labor and delivery gown will help your partner feel more attractive and comfortable as you await your baby’s arrival. If you want to surprise her with the new gown is a gift, look for something soft and cozy that makes nursing easy and doesn’t have clasp, buttons, or buckles to scratch sensitive skin.
  • Toiletries. Pack a bag with your wife or partner’s favorite shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lip balm. Hospitals are not known for having luxury products.
  • Warm socks. Healthline explains that women often get cold while pregnant and in labor. This can be because of everything from low blood pressure to anxiety. And you can bet that her feet will be the first thing to catch a chill.
  • Nursing bra. A nursing bra will help support your partner’s breasts while providing easy access for your little one at feeding time.
  • Phone charger. Unless you plan to go off the grid while you’re in the hospital, you and your partner will want to be in contact with your closest friends and relatives. Pack your chargers, and make sure that you have the right type of cable for both of your phones.

In addition to the items above, you also want to make sure to pack plenty of snacks. Not only will she be hungry after the birth, but you will be up plenty throughout the night and will want something to tide you over till morning. Grab an extra pillow and blanket for yourself and, perhaps most importantly, don’t forget the car seat, baby’s clothing, identification, and any paperwork required by the hospital. Further, if your partner wears contact lenses, pack her glasses. It is not uncommon for a pregnant woman’s eyes to get dry, and nobody wants to fumble with contacts when it’s time to get cozy with the baby. A tablet or laptop with access to Netflix or your favorite streaming services will help pass the time during the early hours of labor.

Congratulations on your upcoming addition. You will soon be an integral part of a brand-new life, and this is an exciting journey that you can share with your partner. Get prepared now, and you can enjoy the birthing process together without stress or worry that you left something behind.
